History of Medicine Faculty

The Faculty of Medicine was established on March 3, 1988 in Mazar-e-Sharif by the Prime Minister of that time, Dr. Sultan Ali Keshtman, with many problems in terms of lack of building, classrooms, laboratories, learning materials, and most importantly, lack of academic staff. This faculty started its activities for the first time with (45) students, (11) professors, teaching and administrative staff under the supervision of Dr. Ali Yousefpour.

At that time, only two or three rooms belonging to the Regional Hospital of Mazar-e-Sharif were considered as classrooms and clinical courses of the medical faculty. In terms of teaching staff, the majority of lecturers were the faculty members of Kabul Medical Faculty, who were assigned as a weekly or monthly basis to teach the practical and theoretical courses of Balkh Medical Faculty. The Faculty of Medicine, its staffs, and students worked cooperatively and voluntarily to move this faculty to the newly built building of Education Faculty’s dormitory.

By successfully graduating the first cohort of medical students, and presenting qualified and well-trained doctors to the medical community of this country, this educational institution has found its academic place in country, and its reliability increased day by day.

It is worth mentioning that the tireless efforts of faculty administration and its staff for more than three decades is commendable and praiseworthy since they have worked hard to enrich the faculty academically.

Although there is still no standard building, classes, laboratories, and academic hospitals to progress the practical lessons of students. The practical lessons and internships of students are being done in Balkh Regional Hospital, but nevertheless, this faculty has been able to graduate 27 cohorts of students.

In the initial years, the Faculty of Medicine was at the lowest level in terms of academic cadres, but now it has academic cadres with ranks from assistant professor to professor, which most of them have doctorial and master’s degrees. The academic rankings of faculty’s members are as following: 1 Pohand, 6 Pohanwal, 10 Pohandoi, 13 Pohanmal, 23 Pohanyar.  Among them, 33 of them are MD, 33 have a master’s degree and one of them has a Ph.D.

For the purpose of capacity building, the academic cadres of this faculty achieved doctoral, master’s, and short-term scholarships in different countries and professors of medical faculty have been sharing the received knowledge with students.

Unfortunately, the Faculty of Medicine has undergone a series of unpleasant changes during its academic life, such as facing a deep academic recession in the 1990s for a period of more than three years. With the new government, the faculty was able to find its academic status again.

The administration and professors of this faculty, have voluntarily started the reconstruction of the faculty’s building and its yard, and donated some laboratories for practical work of students. The library of this faculty are equipped with 10, 0000 updated books and is ready for the use of students.
